Ultraportable Laptops and UMPCs
The laptop market is changing rapidly, no longer is a good ultraportable notebook always considered the best choice for traveling. Now we have UMPCs and sub-9" laptops that are highly competitive. The market started off before any of these names even existed with the OQO model 02. Featuring a Via processor and equipped with wireless cards and with Windows Vista as options, the OQO model 02 was ahead of its time. More recently Asus has produced the EEE PC which took the market by storm. Everex followed up with the Cloudbook, a wonderful but imperfect piece of hardware. Close on the heels of both products comes the Intel 2go PC which was known as the NetBook. Still we have the ultraportable Apple MacBook Air and the Thinkpad X300 fighting for the high end of this market segment. Sandwiched in between is the used segment, where a true bargain can be had with the last Thinkpad sold by IBM. The Thinkpad X40 sits right above the sub-9" laptops in price but has all the functionality of the MacBook Air and Thinkpad X300 which cost three times as much! Clearly there are many options out there, but my personal bias will always be towards the Thinkpad X40. |
