What is Tagua
Among other factors is the unique characteristics of ivory, including it's feel and texture, it's hardness, and it's ability to absorb dyes. Ivory is an ideal material for carving, and has long been appreciated for it's beauty - despite the fact that animals’ lives were mercilessly robbed to provide the wealthy with elegant decorations. Would not the prevalence of the material reduce the demand for banned elephant ivory while also making ivory more accessible to everyone? It is often referred to as vegetable ivory; however to the native South Americans who harvest it, process it, and transform it into intricate pieces of art, it is known as TAGUA. The tagua nut is the seed of a particular variety of palm tree found principally in northern South America. Large fibrous clusters of tightly packed woody fruits develop directly beneath the fronds. The seeds mature into a hard, white substance that remarkably resembles animal ivory, and are harvested without damaging either the plant, or it's natural surroundings. So great is the similarity between tagua and animal ivory that artisans often leave some of the brown shell on their products to prove that they are not using elephant ivory—an internationally banned material. So, what is tagua? It's the beauty of ivory, combined with a caring attitude toward the natural world that surrounds us. |
